The oil and natural gas commission was established in 1956 to search for the deposits of mineral oil and natural gas and to search their production .

It found mineral oil deposits at Digboi in Assam and Ankhleshwar in Gujarat .

Later , mineral oil and natural gas deposits in the gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat were also found .

It drilled 8500 oil and 33 natural gas wells in Bombay High with the help of Russian scientists by a drill ship called sagar samrat .
