+3 oxidation state is common to all elements in which 2 electrons of s- subshell and one from d or f- subshell are removed. The 4f electrons are strongly screened by inner electrons of 5s and 5p electrons. Thus, 4f electrons are not involved in the bonding. Besides these, some lanthanoids show oxidation states +2 and +4. They are formed in case of f^0, f^2 , f^14 configurations or resulting ions.
For example : Ce4⊕ (f ^0) ; Eu^2⊕ and Tb^4⊕ (f^7) ; Yb^2⊕ (f^ 14)
