The opening thus revealed is called the stoma (meaning "mouth") and is surrounded by one or two peristomes. Each peristome is a ring of triangular "teeth" formed from the remnants of dead cells with thickened cell walls.

peristomes are the circular ring of triangular teeth that are formed because of dead cells. there are total 16 teeth in a single circular ring.  

in funaria there are 32 peristome teeth in two circular rings.
