The history of Indian Railways dates back to over 160 years ago. On 16th April 1853, the first passenger train ran between Bori Bunder (Bombay) and Thane, a distance of 34 km. It was operated by three locomotives, named Sahib, Sultan and Sindh, and had thirteen carriages.

➴ Railway services deserve appreciation of travelling in India.
➴ Railways manufacture the own equipment like Railway engine, passenger coaches , goods coaches etc. These are also produced privately.
➴ There are three types of railway engine:- steam, diesel and electric.
➴ Steam engines are used only for tourism purposes and as a heritage trains.
➴ Diesel and electric engines are produced at Mihijam in Chittranjan Locomotives Works in West Bengal, Diesel Locomotive works at Varanasi and Tata Locomotive works at Jamshedpur.
➴ Passenger coaches are manufactured at Perambur, Bengalura, Kapurthala and Kolkata.
