Descent of the Ganges or arjuna's penance is a monument at Mahabalipuram, on the Coromandel Coast of the Bay of Bengal, in the Kancheepuram district of the state of Tamil Nadu, India. Measuring 96 by 43 feet (29 m × 13 m), it is a giant open-air rock relief carved on two monolithic rock boulders.

the sculpture is uneven but very distinct and spontaneous in representation there is a flow in the whole composition there is a crowd of life size human and animal figure they include gods and sages all in the flying position there is a cleft in between the two boulders all the figures are shown facing the cleft . through there are lots of movements and energy on the upper part of the relief in the lower part of the composition the life shown almost calms down the ascetic figure in the relief according to same scholars is gangavatarana where Shiva has been shown receiving the flow of ganga in his hair
