India is actually one of the top milk producers. However in the past, though, farmers who raised cattle and produced this huge quantity of milk were always poor, even though they were working very hard. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, contributed to improving the lives of Gujarat cattle farmers by organising them into a cooperative named the Amul Dairy
Explanation:
- In Kheda, the farmers shifted towards Sardar while they were at the mercy of milk contractors. Sardar Patel, who was already in 1942 in favour of farmer cooperatives, repeated his suggestion that they should sell their milk in their own cooperative society. It would have a pasteurization facility of its own. He instructed the farmers to ask for permission to establish such a cooperative.
- Mr. TribhuvandasPatel was given this task. He unified the disorganised farmers and set up a cooperative unit for milk production. This marked the beginning of Kaira District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited (KDCMPUL). This cooperative system had replaced the intermediaries who abused the naive farmers and manipulated them. At that time it was good providence that took a young and robust Indian engineer, educated in America, to work at the dairy research center; Tribhuvandas was looking for the support of this smart young person, who was none othe thatn Dr. Verghese Kurien
- Dr. Verghese Kurien who had completed his Masters Degree in Dairy Engineering arrived at Anand to serve the bond period against the govt. scholarship for his education. In the beginning, Dr. Kurien served there jand completed his bond period and was about to leave KDCMPUL; however, he was persuaded to stay back at Mr. Tribhuvandas Patel, founder of KDCMPUL. He along with Mr. Patel started developing cooperatives in the Kheda district to procure the milk from the farmers and to pay the farmers their proper amount according to the milk quality
- Dr. Verghese Kurien wanted to give KDCMPUL a unique name that could be easily pronounced by all and also help in growth of the union. Hence the name AMUL came into being.
