Normally, the southwest monsoon can be expected to "burst" onto the western coast of India (near Thiruvananthapuram) at the beginning of June and to cover the entire country by mid-July. Its withdrawal from India typically starts at the beginning of September and finishes by the beginning of October.

South-west monsoon system in India.
- India has a monsoonal climate with monsoon arriving in may/june in most of the Indian states.
- The warm winds from Arabian sea and Bay of Bengal travel to India towards north and cause precipitation in Indian states.
- The winds collide with the great Himalayas in north and north-eastern regions.
- The mountain ranges of eastern/western ghats also impede the path of the winds.
- Due to the collision, condensation of warm winds takes place and precipitation occurs, resulting to a south-west rainy season till august/september.
