Explanation:

The atomic hydrogen emission spectrum was split into a number of spectral sequence, with the Rydberg formula giving wavelengths. The spectral lines observed are due to the transitions of the electron in an atom between two energy levels.

An electron orbits a nucleus at a stable rate of energy. As electrons move down to the n = 2 orbit, they emit particular frequency, hence the colour  photons that can be seen in the visible portion of the em spectrum as emission lines.
