Answer:This is a poetic English translation of the Santiniketan (Shantiniketan) series of spiritual essays composed by Rabindranath Tagore between 1908 and 1914. Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was a Bengali polymath, and the first Asian Nobel Laureate. His other spiritual works include "Sadhana - The Realization of Life" (1916) and "The Religion of Man" (1931).

For a prior translation of some of the essays. Yet another prior translation of a selection of the essays is available from Parabaas.

English dates in this (present) translation are approximates based on the Vishuddha-Siddhaanta Panjikaa available at drikPanchang.

That Tagore was a polymath, is well-known. What is not as well-known, however, is that Tagore was also a mystic, a religious reformer and a God-Realized Soul. The hope of this translation is to highlight those relatively little-known aspects of Tagore, and bring them to the fore. It is, however, questionable - from these essays - whether Tagore ever attained the Nirvikalpa Samadhi and/or the Final Beatitude in this time-period (1908-1914).

I would like to mention that Tagore was conceived after his father - Maharshi Debendranath Tagore - returned from a personal spiritual sojourn (retreat or pilgrimage) in the Himalayas. Maharshi received a direct command from God to go back to family life (cf. The autobiography of Maharshi Devendranath Tagore). It would also not be superfluous to mention that Tagore was blessed by the noted 19th century Saint Bamakhepa (Bamacharan Chattopadhyay; He blessed Tagore with the boon of God-Realization), by Lalon Shah Fakir - a revered old Master of the Baul sect - whom Tagore met in his youth, and by Sree Narayana Guru, the noted saint from Kerala - whom Tagore met in the company of Rev. Charles Freer Andrews. Tagore met Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Dev twice - once when he was a kid, and later in 1883 at the annual festival of the Nandan Bagan Brahmo Samaj.

I would like to humbly dedicate this work to the Native American Church for the role they are playing in current American society parallels the same Brahmo Samaj once played in India's religious history. I would like to take a moment to silently reflect on the transformative journey I and many others have had on the spiritual path. - Shibamouli Lahiri, Sep 7 2018.

Oh Lord! Please forgive me that I'm undertaking this work of translation that describes your attributes - You, Who Are Beyond All Attributes. - humblest servant of yours, Shibamouli Lahiri.
