In the story by munshi Premchand, he named this story "kafan" which means shroud because the entire story revolves around two men, Madhav and Ghisu looking around for money from different people to buy a shroud for Madhav's dead wife. These two men were greedy and hopeless.

What is the theme of shroud?

"The Shroud" explores the theme of hypocrisy in religion. In Ghisu and Madhav's society, the upper classes are often associated with priesthood and religious purity. In this society, people are willing to give great sums of money to the upper caste for religious rituals and festivals.

Why is shroud symbolically important in the story shroud?

The Shroud (Symbol)

As such, they decide not to buy the shroud and instead spend the money on food and alcohol. On the one hand, the shroud is a symbol of tradition, which requires a funeral shroud out of respect for the deceased person's body. Yet the shroud also becomes a symbol of irony and religious hypocrisy.

Hope it helps..
