Modal - They are the finites that display the mode or manner of the actions denoted in the principal verb.

'Need' and 'Dare' are considered as semi-modals.

Reason - They can be used as modal auxiliaries or as principal verbs.

Uses of -

Need and Need to

It indicates the absence of obligation as a modal auxiliary verb in negative expressions. It used to express the speaker's Authority or advice and used in the future and present.

Examples - You needn't type this report.

(i) The interrogative is formed by inversion.

Example - Need I speak to him?

(ii) Its past is needed to in the affirmative sentences, need not have in the negative and need have in the interrogative.

Examples - You need to go to the barber - your hair is too long. (Affirmative in the future)

Dare

It refers to being bold and courageous. The native is formed by dare not and the interrogative by inversion.

Example - Dare we talk to them?

Used to

(i) A discontinued manner or a past situation which is no major in the present.

Example - He used to play daily. (Now he does not play)

(ii) Something being in the past.

Example - This used to be dense jungle before.
