Answer:
was September/October of 1970. This was the first time we were going on holiday with our three little girls, aged 2, 1 and two months. We had booked in at a rather old family hotel in Durban, on the east coast of South Africa.
We had asked for two cots to be put in our room, for the two oldest girls, the baby would sleep in her carry-cot. To our consternation, no cots were in the room. We were there out of season, so what was the problem? Where were our children supposed to sleep?
On the second day, after repeated requests, a single bed and a cot were moved into our room. At least that problem was sorted out.
By the end of the third day, or eldest had lost her appetite. She never was a big eater, but now she was refusing to eat more than two or three bites.
The fourth day was pleasant, as the strong wind blowing from the ocean had calmed. We sat on the beach with a hired umbrella, armed with buckets and spades for the two toddlers. The eldest just sat there, disinclined to play.
By the fifth day, our middle daughter had followed suit, off her food and listless. Now we were really starting to get worried.
By the time we got home, I had already decided to take them to the doctor. On the way, in the car, I had noticed swollen glands in their necks, and they both had a fever. It didn’t really need a doctor to tell me they had mumps.
Within days, their baby sister caught the mumps too, as did my husband and I.
