Write about Thomson Model of Atom and it's limitations.
Answers
Thomson proposed a model on the basis of known properties available at that time. The known properties are:
Atoms are neutrally charged
Negatively charged particles called electrons are present in an atom. Learn about Charged particles in Matter in more detail here.
Limitations of Thomson’s Atomic Model
Thomson’s atomic model failed to explain how the positive charge holds on the electrons inside the atom. It also failed to explain an atom’s stability.
The theory did not mention anything about the nucleus of an atom.
It was unable to explain the scattering experiment of Rutherford
THOMSON MODEL OF ATOM :
⏭️ Thomson was the first to propose detailed model of Atom.
⏭️ Thomson proposed that ans atom consists of a uniform sphere of positive charge in which electrons are distributed more or less uniformly.
⏭️ This model is also known as 'Plum - pudding model'.
LIMITATIONS :
⏭️ In this model mass of the atom was considered to be uniformly distributed over the atom.
⏭️ It is a static model. It doesn't reflect the movement of electron.
⏭️ It couldn't explain the stability of atom.
