The term "uselessness" is pretty vague and not very appropriate, so I suggest using "pointlessness".
There's absolutely no point living in the past and reminiscing over and over again. There's no use crying over spilt milk. There's no point being optimistic or pessimistic; both will eventually lead to disappointment and depression. Be realistic and see the good as well as the bad in the world. Don't waste your present always thinking about the past and future. Live. What happens tomorrow can be dealt with tomorrow.
