The van 't Hoff factor is the ratio between the actual concentration of particles produced when the substance is dissolved and the concentration of a substance as calculated from its mass. For most non-electrolytes dissolved in water, the van 't Hoff factor is essentially 1.
Van’t Hoff factor (i) is used to express the extant of association or dissociation of solutes in solution.

i = Normal molecular mass/ observed molecular mass.

In case of association, i has a value less than one.

In case of association ,i has value more than 1.

In case there is no association or dissociation the value of i is equal to one
