Vermicomposting :
- It is the process of preparing compost with the help of red worms ( type of earthworm).
- The garbage that is used to make compost can be used for vermicomposting.
- The garbage acts as food for earthworms.
Methods of vermicomposting:
- Dig a pit for about 30cm deep or keep a wooden box at a place which is neither too cold nor too hot.
- Spread a net or chicken mesh at the bottom of the box or pit.
- Spread 1 or 2 thick layer of sand as an alternative
- Now, spread some vegetable waste including peels of fruits over this layer of sand
- Shiny or plastic coated paper must not be used.
- Sprinkle some water to make the layer wet. Do not sprinkle excess water.
- Keep the layer loose so that it has sufficient air and moisture.
- Buy some red worms and put there.
- Cover it with funny bag or old sheet of cloth loosely or a layer of grass.
- Now vermicomposting pit ready.

- They do not have teeth. They have a structure called gizards .
- This helps them to grind food.
- A red worm can eat food equal to its weight in a day.
- Red worm don't survive in very hot or cold surrounding. They also need moisture around them.
