The Indian Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, was passed by the Indian Government in 1972 with the aim of prohibiting the illegal hunting of wildlife and the trade of bone and skins. It has been amended in 2003 AD and its name was kept in the Wildlife Conservation (Amendment) Act of 2002, under which it has been penalized and penalties and harsh. Prior to 1972, India had only five designated national parks. In addition to other reforms, the Act establishes the schedules of protected plants and animal species and makes it roughly illegal for the harvesting and hunting of these species.

This act provides protection to wild animals, birds and plants. This applies to entire India, except Jammu and Kashmir which has its own wildlife laws.

It has a total of 6 schedules which provide protection to wildlife in different ways.

<> Schedule I and Schedule II of Schedule II provide full protection to wildlife. Under these, the highest penalty for crimes is set.

<> Schedule 3 and Schedule-4 are also providing protection but the penalties are very low.

<> Schedule 5 includes animals that can be hunted.

<> The cultivation and planting of plants involved in the sixth Schedule is prohibited.
