The second of five children born to John Wordsworth and Ann Cookson, William Wordsworth was born on 7 April 1770 in what is now named Wordsworth House inCockermouth, Cumberland, part of the scenic region in northwestern England known as the Lake District. His sister, the poet and diarist Dorothy Wordsworth, to whom he was close all his life, was born the following year, and the two were baptised together. They had three other siblings: Richard, the eldest, who became a lawyer; John, born after Dorothy, who went to sea and died in 1805 when the ship of which he was captain, the Earl of Abergavenny, was wrecked off the south coast of England; and Christopher, the youngest,who entre the church and rose to be Master of Trinity college,Cambridge.

William Wordsworth (1770-1850) :

William Wordsworth is one of the most eminent English poets, is rightly considered as the leader of a new era, a new movement, in English poetry.

He was born in Cockermouth in Cumberlandin 1770.

After receiving his education, He went on a walking tour in France, the Alps and Italy.

He lived an unsettled life for some years on his return to England.

He came to LimeLight with his Lyrical Ballads (1798) which he wrote in collaboration with S.T. Coleridge.

The content and style of these ballads was quite novel and even shocking to the readers of poetry then.

It marked the beginning of Romanticism in Poetry.

Wordsworth had great affinities with nature and common man.

He found invisible bonding between Man, nature and God.

Among his best known poems are : 'Daffodils' , 'The Solitary Reaper' , 'Tintern Abbey' , 'Lucy poems' , 'Ode and intimations of immortality' and 'The prelude'.
