My dream garden:
My fantasy garden would be full of colour and it would spill from behind corners and around walkways making you feel good as you walked through. All colours of the rainbow, none of this Pantone colour of the year stuff. Do people really listen to all that? There isn’t a colour I don’t like and mother nature blends all colours together so it’s not like I need a big colour wheel, now do I? Remember the days when we thought purple and orange looked horrid together but all of a sudden its the ‘in’ thing to do.
It would also be a garden with fragrance and plants that entice you to touch them . I don’t know what it is but I find I can’t walk past certain plants without petting them. Plants like grasses, succulents and fuzzy leaved plants. Gardens are here to make our senses come alive. I can see my fantasy garden full of aromatic herbs, a potager garden, a healing garden perhaps. I would also want a collection of wonderful trees to bring birds into the garden. Without trees there would be no canopy to shade the understory plants and provide my home with the benefits from them.
My fantasy garden would be full of plants given to me by friends. I think its important to have the connections from plants that are shared. Like the pink Rose that I took cuttings from when my Mom moved. The pink Rose moves with me every time we move. It will stay around well after my Mom is no longer here and give me something to remember her by. Her love of gardening is what made me successful in my own garden. There is the Rhubarb ,from a coworker, that has struggled in my garden but I won’t give up on it yet. There are the Narcissus given to me from the local garden club, the grasses and succulents given to me from a friend who was moving, the tender plants given to me from a friend because they knew I had a greenhouse.
My fantasy garden, eh? Hmmmm….. I think I already have it. Take away my bad weeds and it’s what I have always wanted. Of course, you could throw in a pool and a hot tub but only if it comes with the hired help to clean it. Yeah, like that’s going to happen. I love my garden and its rolling expanse of garden beds. Of course I could have perfect soil too but then where would the challenges be? How would I learn? I need the challenges that mother nature throws my way. Its part of my life and I love it.
Looking forward I know this will be my last large garden as it is almost time to downsize from this half acre we call home. Its definitely a hard move to make and won’t happen for a few years. On the upside I may have a new canvas to play with and that in itself is exciting.
