I teach golf to many aspiring youngsters, and here are a few things I have observed.
The sheer physical grind. My students get up in the morning, show up at the course, and toil hard for a few hours until lunch break. Then, after lunch, either they play, or practice some other aspect of the game, or go to the gym and work out. They have to do this at least six days a week, whether it is raining or 43 degrees outside or bone chilling cold, for years and years and years.
Injuries. Injuries are a part and parcel of a sportsman’s life. When you are in rehab for three months and very limited in your physical movements, most sportsmen go through a lot of mental agony. Many suffer from depression. Luckiest ones recover fully and can resume their careers; not so lucky ones have to give up the one pursuit they love most and look for something else to do. In any case, repeat injuries always take a toll.
