Village life is plain and simple. Villagers are content with the necessities of life. They have no liking for luxury. They manage with a few pieces of clothes. They prefer the plain food. They discharge their social duties in the simplest manner possible.

Villagers are mostly field-workers. They take to farming. Some of them are artisans. All of them follow the trade of their respective castes. They take to different callings of life. Some are priests, some are milkmen, some are oilmen, some are fishermen, some are washermen, some are barbers, some are drummers and so on. They are not rich and wealthy. But they have enough for their minimum requirements of life.

The village people take part in fairs and festivals. The celebrations are quite plain and simple. They attend the folk dance and the open air dramas. But the aged of them do not attend the functions. They are happy with their house and harvest.

My village

is Vengandur in the Vizuppuram district of Tamil Nadu. We have many acres of

forefather’s farm there. The family goes there to take of farms and other related

work. We do have a family home there which is still used for stays and big

family gathering. Earlier the gatherings used to have many elders of the family

but now the next generation has taken over and meet for occasions there.

We have a

family owned temple there which is taken care of by the family by appointing

the necessary personnel for the same. I went recently to my village for one

such occasion.

I have

always loved to walk in the fields and enjoy nature. Our country relies so much

on agriculture and the people who are responsible for it. But so little is done

for the betterment of their lives. I saw first people standing outside their

homes for filling their share of water. There were taps scattered around the colony

so people could fill up their containers whenever the water would be allowed to

come from the taps. There were timings set for that. Villages even today do not

have water coming from taps in homes! It is a sad state of affairs.

There are no

proper schools and the ones that are there are hardly monitored for

improvement. I have heard of relatives who did their initial education there

but moved out for higher education. But they had to struggle harder to compete

in the real world and they were not even equipped properly for that.

People with

some privilege could still do this. What about poor people? People have still a

long way to go. They still follow old cultures of early marriage, not enough

significance given for educating girl children, belief still old cultures which

are outdated and dos not help them much especially when they are struggling to

survive.

The village

has not improved much for so many years. They are rich in agriculture and people

still rely on it for sustenance but their standard of living has not improved

much. I hope the government takes steps to provide enough initiatives in

villages so people could come out of their poverty and lead a better life.

The first step for improvement is giving people a chance to own their own land and also help with any uncertainties. The next step is to have centres for vocational training and to train both men and women. Also initiate fresh employment opportunities for people have for alternate earnings to add to their current earnings. To come up with fresh ideas for development as they advance in each step.

hope its help you
