BLOOD Blood is the transport medium of the body. A wide variety of functions are carried out by the Nood. You have studied in class IX that blood has two principal components-the blood cells RBC, WBC and platelets) and the plasma .The blood cells remain suspended in the plasma, a yellowish fluid consisting mainly of water (90%) and nutrients, proteins, hormones and waste products. Nearly 55% of the total volume of blood is plasma. Most of the remaining part is made up of RBC (erythrocytes), and WBC (leucocytes). The platelets account for less than 1% of the volume. Red blood cells contain a red coloured pigment, the haemoglubin that plays an important role in carrying oxygen from lungs to all tissues of the body. The white blood cells are extremely important as they provide defense mechanism to the body against infections Blood platelets (also called thrombocytes) are concerned with the clotting of blood.
