➤ Answer :-
↪ Chemical names with Formulas.
➝ Nitrogen :- N₂
➝ Hydrochloric acid :- HCL
➝ Sulphuric acid :- H₂SO₄
➝ Carbonic acid :- H₂CO₃
➝ Acetic acid :- CH₃COOH
➝ Phosphoric acid :- H₃PO₄
➝ Zinc hydroxide :- Zn(OH)₂
➝ Lead nitrate :- Pb(NO₃)₂
➝ Calcium chloride :- CaCl₂
↪ The superscript of the element is the valency of the element.
⟹ Oxygen = O²
⟹ Calcium = C²
⟹ Magnesium = Mg²
⟹ Zinc = Zn²
⟹ Cobalt = Co²
⟹ Uranium = U²
⟹ Barium = Ba²
⟹ Aluminum = Al³
⟹ Chromium = Cr³
⟹ Lead = Pb⁴
⟹ Tin = Sn⁴
⟹ Platinum = Pt⁴
Answer:
The chemical symbol for oxygen is O, but pure oxygen exists as diatomic (“two-atom”) molecules, represented by the chemical formula O2. A molecule of the compound carbon dioxide consists of one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen, so carbon dioxide is represented by the chemical formula CO2.
We can work out the formula of carbon dioxide as follows :
1. Carbon dioxide is a compound made up of carbon and oxygen element. So, first we write down the symbols of carbon (C) and oxygen (O).
2. The valency of carbon is 4 and the valency of oxygen is 2. So, below the symbol C we write 4 and below the symbol O we write 2.
3. We now cross-over the valencies of C and O atoms. The formula becomes C2O4. This formula contains 2 carbon atoms and 4 oxygen atoms having a common factor of 2. So, dividing this formula by the common factor of 2, we get the simplest formula CO2. Thus, the formula of carbon dioxide is CO2.
