The electron arrangement of calcium is 2,8,8,2. This just means there is two electrons in the first shell, 8 in the second etc. and does not give us any information about the subshells these electrons occupy. The full electron arrangement of calcium is 1s22s22p63s23p64s2. That's a little more useful! Counting along we find that the 17th electron resides in the p subshell of the 3rd shell, so has principal quantum number n equal to 3 and angular momentum quantum number l equal to 1
