In a direct sentence the sentence is in present, past or future tense.
It is a sentence in which inberted commas are used.
When you change a direct sentence to indirect sentence you change it to past participle.
Said changes to told and if it's question it changed to asked, if it's order sentence then it changes to ordered.. If exclamation sentence then it changes to exclaimed.
You remove the inverted commas in indirect sentence.

Direct and Indirect changing rules and regulations:-
Direct Speech⇒When the actual words of the speaker are used without making any change in it, called as Direct Speech.
→The words of the speaker are put in Inverted commas(" ")
→The first word of the speaker's begins with capital letter.
→A comma(,) is placed after the saying verb.
Indirect Speech⇒When we only report what the speaker said or just give the substance of speaker's in our own words, it is called as Indirect Speech.
→Inverted commas are removed.
→The tense of speaker changes.
→The comma separating saying verb and speaker's speech is removed.
→The conjunction 'that,if,whether,to' are used in Indirect speech.
→The speaker's speech does not begin with capital letter.
→The words like 'said', 'to' change into 'told', 'asked', or 'exclaimed'.
Some General rule:-
Rule SON
S⇒ First person change according to the subject.
O⇒ Second person change according to the object.
N⇒ Third person has No change.
Changing direct speech into indirect speech:-
1. Simple Present Tense → Simple past tense.
2. Present Continuous Tense → Past Continuous Tense.
3. Present Perfect Tense → Past perfect Tense.
4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense → Past Perfect Continuouse Tense.
5. Simple Past Tense → Past Perfect Tense.
6. Past Continuous Tense → Past Perfect Continuous Tense.
7. Past Perfect tense and Past perfect tense remains same in Indirect Speech.
8. Exclamatory Sentences are changes into Statements
Example:-
He said,"What a beautiful bird it is !"
Ans= He exclaimed that it was a beautiful bird.
