The Angel of Mercy, Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa, who died some years ago, in Kolkata, was called the Angel of Mercy. Yes, she was an angel sent by God from heaven. She was not satisfied with just teaching the students in her school.

She wanted to do something significant for the poor. She came to Kolkata and stayed in a hut bathing the slum children and teaching them cleanliness. The neighboring slum-dwellers wondered who this white-skinned lady was. She was from Albania of Yugoslavia. At the age of eighteen she went to Ireland and became a nun. She joined the Loreto Missionary. Later she sailed to India to serve as a teacher in the schools of the Missionary. When she was aboard a train to Darjeeling in India the call of God inspired her to dedicate herself for the service of the poor and the lowly.
In 1950 Mother Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity. She opened her first Home of Charity, called Nirmal Hriday in 1955. People did not like a Christian doing social service in their midst. But she was not dissuaded from continuing her social service. Over a period of some decades Mother Teresa opened centres of social service one after another and they numbered one hundred and sixty. These included the homes for the dying destitute, charitable dispensaries and homes for the leprosy patients, homes for the orphaned children etc. She often said that the main defect in the human beings was the lack of compassion in them.

She was honored with the Magsaysay award, the Nehru award for international understanding, the Nobel Peace Prize and the Bharat Ratna, which means the crowning jewel of India.
