In Revolutionary France, the Legislative Assembly votes to abolish the monarchy and establish the First Republic. The measure came one year after King Louis XVI reluctantly approved a new constitution that stripped him of much of his power.

Louis ascended to the French throne in 1774 and from the start was unsuited to deal with the severe financial problems that he inherited from his predecessors. In 1789, food shortages and economic crises led to the outbreak of the French revolution . King Louis and his queen, Mary-Antoinette, were imprisoned in August 1792, and in September the monarchy was abolished. Soon after, evidence of Louis’ counterrevolutionary intrigues with foreign nations was discovered, and he was put on trial for treason. In January 1793, Louis was convicted and condemned to death by a narrow majority. On January 21, he walked steadfastly to the guillotine and was executed. Marie-Antoinette followed him to the guillotine nine months later.

France become republic due to following reasons-

1) the then king wanted to raise the taxes.

2) in order to raise taxes the "estates" had to be convened to vote on it. The "estates" were the Clergy, the Gentry and the "third Estate", ie, the poor people

3) All the people thought that great things would come out of the convening of the estates, because this was the first time in more than 100 years that this had been done.

4) All the people were disappointed when the estates were convened and (fast forward) swore to give France a constitution, ie, they wanted a constitutional monarchy. The"Bourgeoisie", ie, the rich, but politically powerless middle class wanted more political power to match their economic power. (Concept of "Bourgeois Revolution")

5) The kind, Louis the 14th, agreed, but then he fled the country to go abroad to fetch foreign armies to help him regain thethrone. His wife, Marie-Antoinette was Austrian. He was caught on his way out of the country and brought back to Paris.

6) The king was sentenced to death for treason (because he had fled and wanted to bring foreign troops into France).

7) The king and his wife were executed.

8) The constitution could no longer be a constitutional monarchy, because there was no king anymore.

9) The constitution was turned into a constitution for a republic.
