Sound indeed can't travel through the vacuum. This can be proved by the following experiment.

1) Take a close glass jar with an electric bell.
2) Connect the jar with a suction pump/air pump which can suction out all the air from inside of the glass.

3) Ring the bell. Initially, you will hear the sound of bell ringing.
4) Turn on the air pump now. You will notice that with the passage of time sound is getting lower.

5) Once all air is sucked out, a vacuum will be created inside the glass chamber and you will not hear the sound of bell anymore.
