When a copper strip is placed in a solution of silver nitrate, then copper nitrate solution and silver metal are formed:
2AgNO3 + Cu ----> Cu (NO3)2 + 2Ag
In this case copper displaces silver from silver nitrate compound. This displacement reaction occurs because copper is more reactive than silver .
