Answer:

When electricity is passed through a conducting solution like copper sulphate, the electricity has the effect of reducing the cations in the solution into their metalic forms. Reducing means gainig of electrons.

In this case the Copper ions ( Cu²⁺) will gain electrons ( reduced) at the cathode ( negative electrode)  to form copper metal

Explanation of The Experiment:

Requirements:

  • Copper sulphate solution
  • Conducting wires
  • Copper plate
  • Brass Key
  • Battery

Procedure:

1) Connect the wires and the battery

2) Connect the positive end of the wire to the copper plate

3) Connect the negative terminal wire to the brass key

4) Dip the copper plate and brass key into the copper sulphate solution ( ensure that the two metals do not touch)

Results

After about 20 - 30 minutes, you will notice dark brown deposit of copper metal covering the brass key.

Explanation

The copper ions in the copper sulphate solution, are reduced to copper metal at the cathode/brass terminal. The brass key acts as the cathode terminal where electrons from the battery enter the copper sulphate solution.

When the electrons enter the solution at the brass terminal, the Cu ions gain these electrons ( 2 electrons) to form copper metal

This copper metal is then deposited on the brass key

This is what is referred to as electroplating and it is used in industries on large scale to plate metals with other metals for aesthetics, to form resistant coats, for lubrication among many other reasons.

This is a simple and fun project that you can easily practice in your school lab with the assistance of your teacher or classmates - Try It!
