hello friend electrolysis of water takes place like this -
Firstly the acidified water which was used as electrolyte breaks down in H+ and OH- Ions .At anode OH- goes and loses electron .
2OH- = H20 +1/2O2 + 2electron
At anode Oxygen gas is evolved.
These electron moves to cathode through wire .At cathode H+ ion is attracted and it gains electron to form H2
2H+ +2 election = H2
So we can see that gas evolved at cathode was doble than the gas evolved at anode .That's how water decomposes.
Thank you and mark it as brainliest if it was helpful.

Answer:

Write an activity to show the electrolysis of water, as an example of a decomposition reaction.

Explanation:

Activity for Electrolytic decomposition reaction of water:-

  1. We have to take the glass beaker which should be fixed with two electrodes, here, the positive electrode will act as the anode & the negative electrode will act as the cathode,
  2. Insert two test tubes into a beaker and Filled almost one-third of the beaker with water . Now observe the level of water.
  3. Connects electrodes with the battery, and now supplies electricity into an electrolyte solution of water.
  4. After some time, switch the current and see the present level of water in the Test tube. Which is now decreased.
  5. The vacant space in test tubes filled with H₂ & O₂ gases.

When the Ion separates:-

  • Two moles of hydrogen gas are released at the cathode.
  • One mole of O₂ evolves at the anode.

Reaction in the process:-

2H₂O ------→ 2H₂ + O₂
