On a daily basis, we may be seeking services of servants, maids, drivers, neighbourhood ironing person and many more. While I'm sure there may be poorer people in our country, these are the ones we interact with and are probably the ones we can influence and impact the most. Here are a few things I thought we could do to help them achieve a better life:

1) Don't bargain with them for a few Rupees. Your daily trip to nearby market by car probably costs more at Rs 5 a KM. Spare some time to understand if their need is genuine and help them if you can. Money spared for them will give you far more satisfaction than spending thousands towards charity funds where you don't even get to know where it went.

2) Fund their kids education. Ask them if their kids go to school. If not, ask them why. Tell them that their only hope of coming out of this vicious circle of poverty is by educating their kids and making them professionally skilled. If their kids work for living, understand their circumstances and see how you can help them in a way that their kids can go to school. If you're the privileged one who ends up funding their education, insist on checking on their progress in school. If possible, meet their kids once a while, check their progress in school and encourage them to study harder.

3) Provide them life and health insurance. Tell them the benefits of insurance. If they can afford, encourage them to buy on their own. If they can't afford, see if you can fund them. When they have an insurance claim, help them with paperwork.

4) Encourage them to open bank account. See if you can deposit their monthly fees directly into their account. Teach them how to use their account, ATM etc.

5) Help them enhance their skills. If there is any skill enhancement course appropriate for them or their family (e.g. Computer education), guide them to enroll and if possible, fund it.

6) Many of the people I interact with migrated from distant villages. Understand the circumstances that lead to their migration. Perhaps you can help them go back to their village without compromising on their financial upliftment, say by helping them get rid of loans etc. If not financially, atleast listen to them patiently and be empathetic.

7) Help them when they or their family face medical problems. Guide them on which doctor or specialist to go to. If possible, fund their medical expenses.

8) If they're illiterate, encourage them to learn to read and write. Encourage them to use any spare time they get to read and learn. If you have spare time and are driven, teach them.

9) Many a times, their men become alcoholics. See how you can empower the woman. Maybe insist on paying only to the lady member and not to her husband. Maybe don't pay cash and only into their bank account.

10) Encourage them to exercise their voting rights. Educate them that a responsible government and driven local lawmaker can help change their lives.

11) Without questioning their faith, see how you can dissuade them from superstitions and dogmatic practices such as child marriage, not sending girl child to school etc.

12) Most of all, encourage them to dream and be positive. Help them define small goals which will uplift their living and if possible, help them achieve those goals.

I'm sure there are many more things, which can change their lives but these are the

Answer:

In general, I work to remove my defects of character.

My wife will confirm that my progress is glacially slow. However, I think I’m working in the right direction. My contributions to society, such as they may be, are entirely dependent upon my character.

Please forgive me for not publicizing my defects in detail, but I work to be more kind and more generous, more careful in my work, and more accepting of others, regardless of how abrasive they may be.

Please note that this does not extend to my criticism of political representatives, because I think they work for me (not the other way around), and as their boss, it is right that I point out their shortcomings on the job. Donald Trump, for example, is incompetent, a stooge and tool for those “behind the throne,” and a man of low character. Now, there’s some character defects for you.
