A new perspective on old age homes
(Introduction- What are old age homes)
Old age homes are institutions for the elderly. All the residents of such homes are senior citizens. The staff takes care of the residents and their needs, helping them out with their daily chores, recreation as well as addressing their basic medical issues.
(Old age homes of the past- negative perspective)
In the years gone by, only those people would go to old age homes whose families were either unable or unwilling to take care of them during their old age. Therefore the residents there were victims of circumstances. Additionally, they were often manhandled by the staff, making their lives miserable. Now however, with greater awareness and availability of technology, the situation in old age homes has improved.
(Old age homes of the present- positive perspective)
Though many people are still forced to go to such institutions, there are many others who decide to shift there willingly, with the consent of their family members. With both husband and wife working, there is usually no one to take care of the elderly at home. Loneliness and depression have become common among the senior citizens. This leads them to the old age home, where they can find companions of their own age group. Also the staff is available round the clock to attend to them in case of any emergencies.
(Conclusion)
The perspective on old age homes has undergone a sea change due to change in lifestyle and broad mindedness. They therefore are now seen as a safer option for the seniors, provided the elders are comfortable with the idea of living there.

With the disintegration of the joint family system, the aged find themselves deserted and alone. It is unfortunate that in the evening of their lives, they are not looked after by their children. The concept of old age homes is for such old people. I made it a point to visit the ‘Old Home’ at Bhiwadi. The Home is situated at a peaceful place. The building is simple but spacious and clean. It seems to be an ideal place for the senior citizens.
A doctor visits the Home daily. There is a permanent nurse employed to look after and tend to their needs on time. The home has a good library and several means of recreation. All the inmates showered their parental love by insisting on having lunch with us. What a satisfying and rewarding visit it was, to meet our grandpas and grannies!
