Winning the Play

A dream gives you hope and I am always a dreamer. My dream was to perform the main character of a play for the annual inter-school drama competition. I was waiting for the golden opportunity to grab me and lift me to that platform.

Years and years of learning to act and practising the dialogues of those legendary fictional figures finally gave me the strength to participate in the competition. I was chosen by the school principal himself and was ascribed the role of Macbeth. And it was as if a shooting star just touched my luck.

The drama competition was held in the XYZ Theatre and everyone was invited. The second performance was "Macbeth" by the great playwright William Shakespeare. I stood at the back of the stage, trembling and reciting the dialogues with all my courage. In a blink, we were called and the veil was lifted.

I was not introduced until Scene 2. I walked into the spotlight, delivering "So foul and fair a day I have not seen." It was true indeed. That day I sweated and trembled but when I was on the stage, I forgot everything else and my focus was all on Macbeth. My best friend was Lady Macbeth and together with her, I was living the entire tragedy.

When the play ended, there was an eerie silence. I could hear me swallowing the blooming anxiety. The first clap was from my Principal. He was standing there proudly and smiling. Then a wave of roaring claps filled the air with appreciation and acknowledgement.

Five more performances were announced until it was the time for the disclosure of the names of the winners. Winning the play and gaining the trophy was not for me, or so I thought.

But it turned out to be the opposite. Our group came in the first position as the best play and we gladly accepted the trophy with open arms. It was my first time performing for a big competition like this. I got overwhelmed and left the theatre with tear-streaked smile.

*Hope it helps you*
