Assam is a state situated in Northeast India. It is one of the Seven Sisters of Northeast. This beautiful land is known as the 'land of red rivers and blue hills' which can be considered as a little part of paradise. Assam is a place with deep cultural roots. The famous Assamese Attire makes the culture and tradition of this state unique and adorable.
The people of Assam have been wearing the handlooms clothes since the ancient time. Though, in this modern era, there are use of western clothes in Assam too, but the people of Assam have not forget about their Tradition and Culture. The traditional Assamese Attire includes these dresses : Gamosa, Suria-Dhoti and Mekhela-Chador. These traditional dresses of Assam are not only created delicately with rich fabric but also looks great and amazing when someone wear it.
- ★ Gamosa :- One of the famous and beautiful handloom traditional cloth of Assam is Gamosa. It is a generally a while rectangular piece of cloth having red border or woven motifs on the sides. It has a great significance among the indigenous people of Assam. Though, the white and red colours are mostly use in the Gamosa, in addition of these colours, other colours also use in the Gamosa.
- ★ Suria-Dhoti :- An attire worn in Assam is Suria-Dhoti. It is also a traditional cloth of Assam. It is worn by the menfolk of Assam. Over the suria-dhoti, they drape a seperate cloth known as Seleng.
- ★ Mekhela-Chador :- Another famous and adorable assamese attire of Assam is Mekhela-Chador. It is a traditional handloom dress of Assam worn by the women. It is a two-piece garments. One piece is draped from the waist downwards and is then folded into pleats and tucked in which is known as Mekhela. Another long piece of cloth is called Chador, whose one end is tucked into the Mekhela and then the rest is wrapped around the body.
These are the main attires worn by the people of Assam. But, Assam is a place where the people of different tribes live together. They carry their own tradition and culture. Therefore, each tribes has their own and different attires.
- ✫ The men of Dimasa Tribe wear a Sgaopha or a Phagri, Rigdo, Risha and Gainthao while the women wear dress fairly similar to the Mekhela Chador with Rigo.
- ✫ The men of Bodo Tribe wear usually Gamosa to cover the body waist down to knee while the dress worn by womenfolk of this tribe is known as Dokhna.

Afterall, the diversity of the state Assam can be seen in the attire worn by the people of Assam.
