Answer:

The idea of generation as a sociological concept is problematic in many ways. As often with social theories, it simplifies and stereotypes multidimensional phenomena. Even though the sociological idea of generation is problematic in relation to the me dia as well to the history of media - it can be a valuable approach in media research.

The media often take an important role in the generational movement. They are both a device for creating generational identity and an arena for remoulding the image of generations. Certainly generation also has significance on the consumption of the media, particularly within the digital culture: different age groups use the media in different ways. However, in this article, I will focus specifically on how the media have functioned as the voice of generations and how they createy the image

of generations.

When talking about generations and media history, I am particularly interested in what kind of role the media has in creating generational consciousness- actively and reflectively or on a more subconscious level. I will also depict how the media are shaping the image of a generation - how the discourse of a generation is realised through the media. I would like to question or at least remould and define the sociological ideas of generations in historical studies. I emphasise the concept of the idea-historical world view or philosophy of life, in particular, through which it is easier to access the thematic structure of generation.

My examples mainly come from my current research into the 100-year history of the student magazine Ylioppilaslehti (University Student Magazine). Ylioppilaslehti. which is still published today, was founded in 1913 as the magazine for all Finnish speaking regional student associations so-called student nations. However, Ylioppilaslehti is not just "any student paper"; it is a significant Finnish cultural and political institution. Through its editors, it bore has borne witness to the lives of the majority of the Finnish political and cultural intelligentsia of the 20th century. The reason for using the theorising of generations in my research is its, some might say exceptional, applicability for media-historical analysis.
