This is the reason why these are being used extensively. However, it is important to understand that as convenient as these are to carry and use these are equally harmful for the environment.

Unlike the cloth and paper bags, the plastic bags are non-biodegradable. It is a challenge to dispose them off. Used plastic bags stay in the environment for years and contribute to land and water pollution. This is the reason why many countries have banned the use of these bags. These countries have replaced plastic bags with paper bags or reusable cloth bags.

The government of India has also banned the use of plastic bags in many states however the same has never been implemented properly. We must understand that these have been banned for our good. Every individual must take it has his responsibility to stop the use of these bags to make our environment cleaner.

The use of plastic bags must be banned throughout the world in order to make earth a better place to live. The task should not be very difficult as these can easily be replaced by bags made of other materials.

Polythene is fairly impervious to degradation by microorganisms. It persists in the environment long after it is discarded.

In recent decades, there has been many projects to develop polymers with comparable characteristics, but would decompose gradually under the influence of sun, air, water and microbes.

The research on these projects continues with other types of polymers as well. Biodegradable wrappings using these new polymers is now finding limited use in industrial applications, household products and food packaging.

Pollution from Polythene In this age of computers and Internet, Use and Throw culture is the order of the day. use anything and after using it, throw it away. Polythene pollution has drastically disturbed everyman’s life style.

Polythene material can be seen spread over in the streets, in the neighbourhood, in the rivulets, river-banks of the small or big rivers. Even Ganga, Yamuna and other rivers all are covered with a thick layer of polythene material. Degradation of plastic is a great challenge.

We can use alternatives like jute bags and clothe bags. If we carry our own bags to shop we can reduce half of plastic waste. Shop owners keep polythene bags keeping in mind that some one may come without any bag in case of emergency.

But all people are coming to shop with empty hands to get free polythene bags. Public say many irrational reasons for not using cloth bags.
