GENDER ROLES IN INDIA

INTRODUCTION -:

The words 'sex' and 'gender' are often used interchangeably. But when we go into it's deeper meaning, by 'sex' we mean the biological characteristics which make up a male or a female. And by 'gender' we mean the characteristics, roles etc they are expected to perform in a certain section of a society. Gender roles are those roles which everyone expects a male and a female to perform in a society.

BODY -:

In India, it's mostly the women who become living victims of utter humiliations and discrimination. But everytime it's not so. Men too suffer. Even if less in number, we should try to reduce that too, isn't it? Often the birth of a girl child is seen as a curse in many parts of India (even now). People try to kill those unborn babies. Some die out of neglect while some are deliberately killed.
The upbringing of girls and boys are again different. Boys are treated to be more important than girls. They are given more attention, more opportunities and more freedom. Talking about freedom, teen girls or young adult (girls) are not allowed to remain out at night. Like, she should be back before darkness sets over. Women who travel alone at night are viewed with suspicion.

Let's take an example -:

Mr Sharma has two children, Dhruv and Priya. From childhood Priya has been asked to be associated with household work like cleaning the house, washing utensils and other chores. While Dhruv has been allowed to do whatever he wants. When he becomes a little bit matured, he is asked to help his father operate the problematic tap perhaps or things like that.

So this is how boy and girls are treated differently. If a man has lesser money he'd obviously let his son go to the school instead of his daughter, no matter how talented the girl maybe. Why? Because the girl will leave her house after marriage and it's the boy who will be earning pillar of the family. Hence why should they waste it on the girl's education and health care right?

(Ikr! Their mentality sucks!)

Conclusion -:

This is why women were seen to take up jobs like nursing, taking care of family, primary school teachers and dieticians. Men were seen to take up jobs like sportsperson and mechanic. BUT THIS IS CHANGING. We can see so many female sportsperson (for instance) from our country who are working so hard to narrow the divide between men and women.

Hope it helps you mate!
