(This is going to be one of my most personal answers.)
Being the elder son of a middle class family, I was really skeptical of my family,s stand on gender equality, the reason of my skepticism since such early childhood being:
-my grandmother, who would keep belting out comments like you are your parent's future and all( although I had a baby sister at the time , 3 years younger to me.)
Little did I know my father was the rebel of his family:
1) His first demand for marriage if at all he did was "I should have a well educated wife, no less than a maths graduate"(This may be a bit offensive to other stream graduates, but what can you do, he is an engineer after all and a proud one at that), and hence they say he rejected all the "beautiful and rich girls" who had sent their proposals owing to his engineer status(Apparently it was a big deal those days).
Today I owe my voracious reading habits and fluent english to my mother.
2)My sister and I have had to obey all the same set of rules, yes including home curfew time!!
3) My sister got her bike(a scooty) and mobile phone before me, she is 3 years younger, still.
My father being the pragmatic person he is , says that I provide you with things according to your needs, and he thought those things were more necessary for her safety, she going to coaching classes and all.
4)When I was unable get into NITs and IITs he sat me down and gave me a good "BETA TUMSE NA HO PAEGA"
hence I had to pursue my engineering from a tier 3 college(although later he admitted that he was wrong and he was proud that I had proven him wrong), but the general idea being he genuinely believed that I was not up for the task and hence I was not offered any chance to take a drop of one year and prepare for it again.
My sister on the other hand could not get into any of the good colleges either, but is currently in Kota and preparing again for the exams, because she genuinely showed some promise in academic prospects(PS: i too am currently coaching in Delhi, so you just can't blame him, he just believes in giving opportunities to the deserving.
So if I do not generalize and from my personal context gender equality sure does exist.
This whole mentality and whole set up is of a middle class family of Chhattisgarh, a state most of the readers might not have heard of.
If gender equality and gender neutrality has penetrated to such grass root level I believe that it is safe to assume that although we are far from achieving it , but we sure have come a long way.
