Dussehra is one of the important festivals celebrated in India. The festival is celebrated on the tenth day from the Hindi calendar of Ashvin. It is also known as Vijaydashmi. It is said that on this day Goddess Durga got victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. She killed the demon in order to establish peace and harmony among the people. The day is also celebrated as Lord Rama attaining victory over the evil Ravana. This festival is symbolic of the winning of the good over the evil. On this day the elders pray and worship the gods and goddess and ask them to maintain their blessings on their family. Everyone wears new clothes and visits to the temple. Many new dishes are made which are distributed among friends and relatives. Children feel very excited about the day as they visit the fairs where they enjoy a lot. It is a ten-day festival which is celebrated with happiness and enjoyment.
Diwali is also known as the festival of lights which is celebrated after Dussehra. It is said that Lord Rama returned to his native place Ayodhya after an exile of fourteen years and in order to celebrate his return the people lighted diyas in their houses. People celebrate the festival by cleaning and decorating their houses, wearing new clothes and by lighting diyas and candles. Different types of sweets are prepared and are given to friends and relatives.
