On June 27, 1880, Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Caspar Keller, a native of Switzerland, was an ancestor of her father, Arthur H. Keller. He served as a confederate army captain. Kate Adams, Arthur's second wife and a much younger woman, was Helen's mother. At the age of 19 months, Helen developed a severe case of brain fever. Helen lost her sight and hearing permanently after the fever subsided. Helen had a strong desire to learn. Despite her disability, she had picked up some basic communication skills, such as how to fold clothes. Later, she demonstrated amazing learning abilities and quickly picked up the ability to read, write, and even speak. She was incredibly passionate about learning. From an early age, Helen shown exceptional talent! Though the difficulties she encountered were rather difficult, it seemed as though Nature had designed a unique obstacle course only for her in order to enable her perform at her best. Helen became increasingly frustrated as she tried to learn more about life after losing her sight and becoming mute and unable to talk. Her visual impairment made learning and teaching more difficult. She also had a hearing impairment. Helen was an extremely hard-working young lady who always tried her best to study. She was constantly inspired to learn because she had such a strong, intrinsic enthusiasm for it. She first had great difficulty with the manual alphabet, reading, arithmetic, etc., but Helen conquered them. Learning to talk was the most challenging of all of them.
