The full name of the program popularly known as ‘Jan Dhan Yojana’ is ‘Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY)’. It was launched on the Independence Day of 2014, by the Prime Minister Sri. Narendra Modi.

The aim of this popular program is to spread awareness and access for the poor, to financial services such as bank accounts, remittances, credit, insurance and pensions. It is run by the Department of Financial Services, which comes under the Ministry of Finance. Under PMJDY, tedious processes and paperwork were done away with. A main feature was that it provided accidental and life insurance cover to the account holders.

15 million bank accounts were opened on the inaugural day and in 2018, it was grown to 318 million bank accounts with deposits totalling 792 billion Indian Rupees. Under this scheme, the States of Kerala and Goa became the first States to provide one basic bank account, to every household in the State.
