Mahatma Gandhi is called "Mahatma" for his great works and greatness which he did throughout his life. He was a great freedom fighter and non-violent activist and practiced non-violence throughout his life, when he was a pioneer for India's independence from British rule. He was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat state, India.

He was just 18 when he was studying law in England. He later went on to study his law in the British Colony of South Africa where he faced discrimination against a person with white skin due to being a dark skinned person. That is why he decided to become a political activist because he could make some positive changes in unfair laws.

He later returned to India and started a powerful and non-violent movement to make India an independent country. It is he who led the Salt Satyagraha or the Dandi March. He inspired many Indians to work against British rule for their freedom.
