Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Transkei, South Africa. He spent over thirty years in prison for his opposition against racist policies enforced by white South Africans. Mandela was exposed to the inequality of his country at a very young age. He was only 12 years old during the passing of his father. He was young and highly knowledgeable to events present inside his nation. Nelson Mandela joined the ANC Youth League. This grouped called for violence which was widespread strikes and boycotts. The actions taken by the group resulted in the banishment of Nelson Mandela and other members from public and ANC meetings. “In response to the ANC ban, the underground group Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), The Spear of the Nation, was formed by Mandela and other nationalist leaders in 1961. They used sabotage as a method of resistance, striking only government targets and other official symbols of apartheid. Mandela traveled throughout Africa and Europe to rally support for MK 's cause, and to study guerilla warfare tactics” (Ryan, James). Soonly after returning to South Africa Nelson Mandela was arrested for high treason. After his release he was elected the first African American president of South Africa. His perseverance and will to carry out a job to restore equality throughout his country is seen as admirable through the eyes of many people.
