Urbanisation has become a common feature in many societies. It has improved the standard of life and increased future prospects. However, it has not came with its share of problems. One that is cause for serious concern is pollution associate with it.

The intensive process of urbanization has sharply aggravated the problem of water supply to the towns. A considerable part of the population in the towns of the developing world, especially the inhabitants of overpopulated slum regions use the rivers and reservoirs for daily needs. In many countries of Asia and Africa the rivers traditionally serve as a burial place.
