Answer:

Sports personalities have to consistently perform to be on the centre stage of the game or sport they participate in. But, at the same time, they must be role models for their fans and the society at large.

Sportsmen must not do anything or act in any manner that could offend others or bring disrepute to their team, district, state or country. As they are public personalities, players and athletes are bound to have a fan following, so they must always ensure they show a positive and dignified behavioural pattern for the public to follow.

Social and Moral Obligation of Athletes

Sports is not a new craze for youngsters in our country. The insanity and madness goes from a teenager to a full grown adult. India is country where we see people burning effigies of cricketers and sportsmen, for their under performance in crucial games. hence, ours is an extremely driven country in terms of emotions. Emotions, which are attached with a particular sport.

Hence, it is indeed important for a sportsperson to stand up to their fans and present before them an example, or so as to say, be an example rather. A sports person in our country, or we can say any other country, is dictated by a high sense of responsibility to spread a positive message for their fans.

Now, for example, the Boost add in India. The sale of Bost took a leap to more than 50% as soon as Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's add hit onscreen, campaigning  for "Boost is the secret of my Energy". This fanaticism also works if a certain Sportsperson has a good public image. The game is the top most priority of course, but the involvement in any affair which taints the public image of the Sports person, is very very vital. Because we are a crowd, that are driven largely by emotions, and less by perspective. It is because of this may be that home ground games like Hockey and kabaddi are loosing it's importance.

A sportsmen may be hit in his sports career for once, and then one can see him becoming a celebrity overnight. And for this, image is everything.

Again, the logic can be opposed especially these days, which is the era of popular TV Shows like Roadies and Splitsvilla. If the Sports person is a so called "BAD GENRE" then he be rather occupying a seat in one of such shows. Hence, the fan following largely depends upon the public image.
