The Kaziranga National Park is located in Assam in between the Nagaon and Golaghat districts. The national park has been declared as a World Heritage Site. The site is primarily known for rhinoceroses as it houses about the three fourths of the world’s total one-horned rhinoceroses. It also has the maximum number of tigers among the various protected areas across the world. The sanctuary also houses swamp deer, wild water buffaloes, and elephants.
The history of the park dates back to 1904 when Mary Curzon, wife of India’s wife Lord Curzon visited the premises. Surprised at not being able to find a single rhinoceros in the area that was known for it, she made her husband take measures to protect the species. This led to the establishment of the Kaziranga Proposed Reserve Forest the following year.
