                             Detachment: A Great Moral Value

Detachment is an invaluable character trait. All great prophets, messiahs, saints and seers have emphasized on the necessity of developing this value in human character.

Everyone must imbibe detachment because attachment to anything in the world is bound to result in pain, sorrow and suffering. Everything is ephemeral; nothing is going to last forever. All things that are born must die one day; so why have attachment to them.

In the play, The Bishop’s Candlesticks, we find the Bishop exceedingly attached to the candlesticks bequeathed to him by his beloved mother on her deathbed. Those candlesticks were stolen by the convict.

Even the Bishop, who was a spiritual man could not keep attachment at b bay; so the need to develop was shaken and woken up by the loss of the candlesticks. He acknowledged God had rightly deprived him of his possession to help him develop detachment.

In conclusion, it can be said that all human beings must develop detachment in their character.

It is very important for everyone to develop the values of detachment. While, developing a sense of attachment is essential to every human being, it is equally important to form a detachment too, especially towards materialistic pleasures. This is because if we become very attached to them, we will find it very painful when those things get damaged or lost. Similarly, being too very attached to a person or a pet can affect us very badly in the event of their death.

Developing a detached feeling helps enhancing an individual’s personal growth and also establish healthy relationships. Detachment also assists a person in identifying his/her individuality and being responsible for his/her life without expecting others to do something for it to become better.
