Spending money is something you really can’t avoid, there’s no working around that. We go shopping, we spend money, and retailers make money. That’s the way life is.

BUT, we can teach ourselves to spend our money wisely. I’m sharing these tips with you on how you can become a smart shopper. Keep them in mind next time you’re online or in-store shopping.

1. Set a budget…And stick to it!

This is a very important first step to being a smart shopper! My suggestion is setting a monthly budget for gifts, clothing, etc. Then, when you go out shopping, have that exact amount in your wallet so you don’t go over the budget! If an item doesn’t fit in your budget, it just isn’t a practical purchase for that month.

 2. Be sure…

Before making a purchase, especially if it’s expensive, make sure that you really need it. Why do you need it? Where will you put it? Do you have enough space for it? What will you use it for? Make a list of the pros and cons of making this purchase, so you can make sure that you actually need the item, not want it. Wait a week before going out and buying this item, so not to make any impulse purchases.

 3. Wait before buying the latest products

Whenever a new phone comes out, people line up to buy it. And of course, retailers will put high price tags on these products cos they will get purchased. But, if you’re willing to wait a year or two before buying a new phone, you’ll definitely get it at a cheaper price.

 4. Pay with cash

Let’s face it, sometimes when you’re paying for stuff with your credit card, you might think that you have more money than you actually do. It’s better to pay with cash, so you can actually see the money that you’re spending, which might make it harder to overspend. And it’s never fun feeling your wallet getting lighter with every purchase you make!

 5. Go shopping at the end of the season

If you’re willing to wait until the end of summer to buy a swimsuit, you can get it for a sale price. Most shops will have sales of up to 75% at the end of seasons or holidays.

 6. Compare prices

Prices can vary from one shop to another, even from one location to another. Also, have a look at online shops, sometimes it’s just cheaper to buy things online!

 7. Always have a list

Before heading out to the grocery store, make sure you have a list of what you need. And make sure to stick to the list! If you grab something that isn’t on the list, ask yourself if you really need the item. If the answer is “no”, put it back on the shelf and walk away.

Also, NEVER go grocery shopping if you’re hungry! If you’re hungry, everything will look absolutely delicious (even if you’d usually think it’s nasty), and you’ll end up overspending.

 8. Buy your groceries online

I do this with most of my grocery shopping, and I can definitely say that it saves me a bunch! First of all, if you get hungry while doing the shopping, you can just step in the kitchen and grab a snack. This means you’re not going to overspend just cos you were hungry. You can easily take things out of your shopping cart if you went over the budget, and you can compare prices of product much better. The cherry on top? The groceries get delivered right to your door! This is where I do my grocery shopping.

 9. Try on clothes

Sizes vary from retailer to retailer, so it’s always a good idea to try on clothes before buying them. In the dressing room, sit down and stretch your arms, to make sure that the clothes fit properly and are comfortable. There’s no point in buying something just cos it looks cute, but then ending up wearing it only once cos it’s uncomfortable.

 10. Resist the sweet talk

When you’re in a store trying to figure out if you really need an item, beware of salespersons. Remember, these people are trained to convince you to spend as much as possible. It’s their job! If you’re not sure whether or not you want to make a purchase, go for a walk and really think about it.

11. Loyalty cards

Most stores have loyalty cards which will accumulate points with every purchase.

 12. Follow retailers

Like your favourite stores on Facebook so you never miss a sale, deal or contest!

 13. Sometimes it pays to spend more

Taking care of your money is definitely important, but sometimes buying something cheap can backfire! Make sure the quality of the product you’re buying is good. Even though high quality products are expensive, they will last longer. Be a smart shopper by always doing your research on the product’s quality before buying it.

14. Use cashback sites

If you’re going to buy something online, go to a cashback site (I highly recommend Ebates) and click to the company you want to buy from. You will literally get cash back when you make an online purchase!
