Answer:
Schools and education activists along with parents seem to be headed towards another clash as many schools are not allowing online classes for those who have not paid the fees. While parents say this is ‘unfair’ considering some of them are struggling to make ends meet, schools say they too have been stretched financially because non-receipt of fees from many.
Shahid Sharif, an RTE activist and member of its verification committee, said they are planning to file a police complaint. “Many schools are demanding fees for online classes even from RTE students. How can an RTE student’s family afford to pay. As the government is giving fee reimbursement to all eligible schools, there is no reason for extra fees that are being demanded,” said Sharif.

Some parents took to social media saying it was ‘humiliating’ to see students not being allowed online classes. Schools on the other hand say without fee collection, their already stressed financial condition will collapse. A school owner, who did not wish to be identified, said many parents have not even paid last year’s fees. “In Nagpur, if you start checking with schools, on an average there will be 5% parents who have not paid since December. Now that has got nothing to do with the Covid-19 pandemic. And now with many refusing to pay, how will we support teachers?” the owner said.
Speaking to TOI, major school associations like Unaided Schools’ Forum (USF) and Independent English Schools’ Association (IESA) had earlier stated that job and pay cuts in schools have begun.
Rajendra Dayma, president of IESA, said, “Our members have no choice but to identify jobs that will have to slashed to keep surviving financially. Majority of parents, who are taking undue advantage of the Covid-19 crisis, are refusing to pay up and still want the education of their children to continue. Parents don’t realize that teachers may lose their jobs if the fees are not paid.”
